CAREGIVERS’ PERSONAL STORIES
“My name is Crystal and I have been a care giver for my mother Margaret is for the last eight years. My mother was diagnosis with dementia eight years ago as the disease progress I eventually moved her in to live with me and my husband. I took care of her like a child until it started bringing a lot of stress on me physically and mentally and brought stress into my marriage…
We couldn’t go a lot of places, when we travel we took her everywhere we went. She stayed in the hotel room with us, when I went walking to relieve stress I had to take her along. After four years I finally placed her in a Senior Citizen facility. She has been there for a little over a year. I notice she was not getting enough of outside social time, then I heard about Silver Citizen Matinee Social and other events I started taking my mother out so she could have a place to go outside the facility and socialize with others like herself. This time of activity that keeps her engaged and laughing has been a blessing.”

“Have you ever wanted to give someone’s life more purpose and more meaning after they have reached a point in their life where they feel useless?? Janet Mackins, your program was a catalyst in finding a way to put safe social situations back into my mother’s life as this was the way she used to thrive and gain vitality… Janet, I am so very fortunate that I met you earlier this year as I have been actively caring for my mother during this last year and have been searching for a source to integrate social activities back into her life. Mom’s life was filled with seizures, lack of mobility, fear of meeting people and no desire to continue living at this level of life…You have created Silver Citizens Matinee Social as part of your program that is dedicated to giving back seniors a part of life they have lost or given up on as they age and have no way of interacting with others on their own. You dedicate yourself to locating safe venues and the afternoon is comprised of spiritual inspiration, various types of entertainment and calorie conscious lunches followed by prizes for them. You have a way of making them all feel special while they are in a safe group atmosphere. You always invite people that can assist mature adults with options to facilitate growth and create a better quality of life. How many people do you know that can undertake such a huge task and become successful at it? My mother is 83 years young & her first introduction back into the social world was through your program, Silver Citizens Matinee Social. It was instrumental in changing her mindset and she now realizes how important it is to improve her eyesight and her mobility, so she can continue with these social interactions. My mother is now excited to be starting “water” therapy, Silver Sneakers and her seizures have lessened…Your program has given my mother a chance to realize that she still wants to participate in life and has given her enough confidence to stretch her arms and grow in a very closed-in world… My mother’s story is just “1” of probably thousands of lives that you and your program touch every month. You are an inspiration to me and a “lifesaver” to many others… Continue your good work… Your efforts are appreciated by all of us…”
